Welcome to EC Buzz, the free monthly
e-newsletter about clear communication

So what is a buzzword?

A buzzword is a trendy word or phrase that sounds important or profound because it suggests the user has special knowledge or experience.

Buzzwords often start out as technical jargon with a well-defined meaning. But in the outside world, clarity disappears and the meaning becomes obscure – which explains why buzzwords are so popular in the corporate world.

What's wrong with using buzzwords?

Buzzwords may be standard-issue business-speak, but they become a problem when communicating with clients:

  • Clients may misunderstand or be baffled by them
  • Sales reps may also misinterpret them
  • They quickly become stale and lose impact through overuse.
